Record-Setting Sailfish Tourney Should Lure Anglers to The Palm Beaches

Fishermen have a saying – “Good things come to those who bait.”  That was surely the case at the 75th Annual Silver Sailfish Derby in Singer Island, Fla. Jan. 5-7, 2012. This year, a fleet of 46 boats released more than 1,100 sailfish during the three-day tournament – a number that shattered all previous records.  The next closest occurred in 2006 when 50 boats released 958.

According to Tom Twyford, president of the West Palm Beach Fishing Club, the best season for sailfish catches in Palm Beach County is December – February.  “Sailfish are migratory,” stated Twyford.  “What moves these fish in big numbers to our area is a cold front from the North.  You’ll find the bites are especially best after a passing cold front, which is what we recently experienced during the tournament.”

With 47 miles of Atlantic Coastline, The Palm Beaches offers a plethora of boating and fishing opportunities for anglers in search of the big catch.  Numerous marinas are available to dock a personal watercraft or to charter a fishing excursion.
